Update from CCP 01:20CET (15/6):

“A message from our COO.

At 17:00 UTC today, CCP became aware of a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) against the EVE Online cluster and web servers.

Our policy in such cases is to mobilize a taskforce of internal and external experts to evaluate the situation. At 17:55 UTC, that group concluded that our best course of action was to go completely offline while an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure was executed.

While some may feel that such a drastic reaction was not warranted, it is always our approach to err on the side of caution in order to ensure the best possible service for our players and the security of their personal, billing and account information.

We understand the effect this disruption has had for our players and apologize for not having been able to explain fully to the community what was going on. In these cases it can often be counterproductive to containment to give out information while we are in the process of evaluating the scope of any potential problem.

Our taskforce concluded at 22:05 that neither the game servers nor the CCP infrastructure had been breached. Further, we can also confirm that no personal details such as users’ credentials or credit card numbers were exposed through this incident.

The servers were brought back online at 23:00 and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Again, we sincerely apologize for this disruption.

Regards,

Jón Hörðdal

Chief Operating Officer”

Update 21:00 CET:

A new post on LulzSec’s twitter account has confirmed that it’s a DDOS that has brought the Eve Online network offline.
At the time of this update the EVE Online IP network range was disconnected from Internet (nullrouted).

Update 19:00:
There are indications that the attack is a form of denial of service attack since CCP staff got kicked out of the IRC chatrooms they reside in on Irc.coldfront.net.

[18:57:19] * %[QA]Vertex (benh@community.coldfront.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
[18:57:31] * %[CCP]PrismX (askur@staff.ccpgames.com) Quit (Ping timeout)
[18:58:14] * %[QA]Stillman (QAStillm@staff.ccpgames.com) Quit (Ping timeout)

Original story:

According to a twitter post by LulzSec they just wiped out the EVE Online login servers.

LulzSec The Lulz Boat
We just wiped out the login server for Eve Online, and it accidentally took their website out at the same time: eveonline.com

This allegedly also brought down the EVE Online  websites.

At the time of the writing of this post the EVE Online website is currently down and the EVE Online cluster is not responding.

More to follow!

If not activism, the least lulzsec could do is do something actually funny. There’s things out there that would be hilarious and wouldn’t compromise national security/ interrupt gamers/ piss people off.

I thought it was snowball day in Jita again.

GloriaJune 17, 2011

Freaking brats doing it again -_-’

johnJune 15, 2011

CCP great stuff safety first and just of-line the servers :) no buddy cares that you guys done that we just love the game, and this is how you guys show how serious you take our privacy and such….

3x1tJune 15, 2011

DDosing a popular game? where is the sence in that? Inpressing?
If they want to impress me they have to hack into FBI or CIA or somethign like that. Otherwise they are just a bunch of noobs. Anyone with a very little IT knowledge can do a ddos attack but not anyone can hack into some of the other institutions. They are just noobs XD

CarlosJune 15, 2011

Yea they want those ppl to admire them… and also they hack in a the servers of a very popular game…. they suck…
they do not want ppl to admire them they are just jealous on other hackers groups who do not even bother to reply to this shit they did last night…. they would do anything to be ” admired and seen” better than the others groups…
I do not admire any of them.. hacking is just idiotic… you do not have the guts to do something face to face and you hide behind a screen and a keyboards and you do shit to other ppl work… cos the other groups take informations and use them for their own purposes but they never destroy ppl’s work…
That does not make them better… but at least you do not have to start from scratch all your work….
Thy did not do that ” to be admired” they did it to ” put another big name on their hacking list” … that is just rubbish…

MihaJune 15, 2011

DDOS is sometimes used to overload a sever so that it can be hacked, so while it is not technically hacking, it is a hackers tool.

IanJune 15, 2011

Attacking Consoles. People will most likely love you. But attacking the 2 games that are usually associated with people of a more technical background, people that you’d want to admire you? Why?

SpoonJune 14, 2011

this is crazy

JohnJune 14, 2011

To the person who doubts their tweet: If they hadn’t named all the DDOS’ed sites, I’d be willing to agree, but unless the internal disagreements are such that there are spies from other attack groups on the internet infiltrating each other, I’d say naming all the downed sites is as good as proof to me.

DigestionJune 14, 2011

Thank you :) the trackback has been approved.

SirRageAlotJune 14, 2011

We did a nice links back and posted about why EVE is AWESOME and hackers shouldn’t take it down. http://goo.gl/tACy9

MikeJune 14, 2011

Stupidity will never end, it seems.
I guess the little lulZ guys are feeling proud of their acts, like if they had balls and were real men, while they actually are only showing once again that some people have fun destroying anything they can. Give them the nuke and they will nuke the World. Like any single Pker does in any game. Cause their Mom may have not loved them enough when they were kids. Or their father was violent. Or the girl they were in love with did reject them. No way they would learn any wisdom, it’s easier to kill instead. How pathetic… Poor humanity

MashimaraJune 14, 2011

It’s childish abuse of power by a group that didn’t agree with Anon’s useful activism and just wanted to kick over sandcastles and break things. I hope they continue to piss off gamers, internet users, and governments until there is no slice of sympathy left for their childish antics.

RaxJune 14, 2011

Hrm. Now I’ll have to go outside and play sports. grumble grumble.

They took out EVE Online and Minecraft. I’m not the least bit suprised WoW is still up. If that went down they’d have to rebuild their Tuesday raid group.

Taco ManJune 14, 2011

Why cant they DDoS something taht needs it? like aeriagames, more people to egt QQ from there. oh well, guess its back to watching movies iwth my GF instead fo EVE. (dangit)

SirulnJune 14, 2011

You consider a tweet from the people who are claiming to have done it confirmation? because they would never lie for the lulz… oh wait.

RobJune 14, 2011

Well a DDOS isn’t hacking, it’s like thinking you won a argument by constandtly going “LALLALALALLALALALALA” with your fingers in your ear’s. What it is is vandalism; Not hacking. If I put 240 volts into a USB port and the compter stops working, is that hacking – NO, that’s vandalism. I say vandalism but its realy another word for stupid.

Knowing eliments in the Eve Community I’d say they may of upset the wrong people. Talk about digging your own graves :\

Now if they were to take down criminal sites and the like; THAT would be constructive use of there bordem. Beyond that a cluster of controled bots sat doing ping -f, seriously – any fool can crash a car on a motorway and cause delays.

Paul GrayJune 14, 2011

No wonder DarkSpace has more players online today…

DrafellJune 14, 2011

After yet ‘shock’ more intel. World of Fags could be the next target! Aim Fire! Good is all i can say to that one..

I know Luzsec try taking down this – http://www.123game.net/game.php?id=646

It just matches your skills

Take a bigger breakJune 14, 2011

DDoS != hacking.
Its a Distributed Denial of Service attack, they are not gaining access to any systems, simply overloading their bandwidth/processors to the point where it can no longer operate.
As soon as the attack is over, everything is back to normal, no permanent damage done.

RE:

“DDOS =/= pwned. If you really managed to hack into EVE, then post the goods. Pics or it never happened, faggots”

———————–

Dude a DDOS doesn’t mean you hack ‘into’ the server, or network, so there is no evidence to post or whatever you’re asking for. It simply floods the server with too much data at once so it either locks up, restarts itself, or worse. Usually doesn’t last too long.

MadGrendelJune 14, 2011

DDOS =/= pwned. If you really managed to hack into EVE, then post the goods. Pics or it never happened, faggots.

HanonymouseJune 14, 2011

Yes – World productivity increased today.. mm not – time to play World of Tanks!

Take a breakJune 14, 2011

pretty typical of people like lulzsec to destroy a tiny tiny fish in the great ocean of gaming. I’m sure they’re very proud of themselves. No doubt they can’t go after blizzard because they all play WoW (RP night elf druids in Goldshire).

It will be interesting to see they keep it up long enough to get the Eve’s unemployed russian pirate playerbase seeking other outlets. How much damage can 20,000 PvP pirates do if they aren’t allowed their usual diversions?

btw: Dust is not a Sony exclusive, CCP wanted it on the XBox, but Microsoft won’t allow crossplatform (PC to Console) gaming, even tho PC players and Console players are never head to head. So it’s a Microsoft-Excluded.

davidJune 14, 2011

CCP is the publisher behind the Space based MMO EVE Online.

SirRageAlotJune 14, 2011

what are CPC and EVE anyway?

generic anonymousJune 14, 2011

hope it comes back on soon.

drewtornJune 14, 2011

who ate all the pies anyhow

Anon2June 14, 2011

LulzSec has no brain.

tomonJune 14, 2011

“lol”

anonJune 14, 2011

Man…. now I might have to actually do some work at work… instead of playing.

Sigh.
